WHY GO ON THIS COURSE?
In these straightened economic times, clinicians need to be open to any alternative income streams. Interests in tangential fields can also be academically worthwhile and mentally stimulating. Appearing as a medical expert witness can be challenging, interesting and remunerative. The uninitiated are apprehensive of court appearance but the reality is that the vast majority of the work in the field is paper based specifically in receiving instructions to see injured persons, examining them and producing a report on the nature and extent of their injuries for the enlightenment of those instructing them and the court.
The focus is on condition and prognosis in the majority of cases and directing one’s forensic skills to areas that often take a back seat in normal day to day practice when principally dealing with diagnosis and treatment issues. The change of emphasis is refreshing.
Building up a practice in medico legal reporting can lead to new professional contacts with lawyers, court staff and other professionals, both in one’s own field and in others which provides both extended professional development and the opportunity for new avenues of endeavour.
The skills required are not overwhelmingly difficult and it is surprising how many clinicians fail to understand the nature of the expert’s relationship with both the court and their instructing attorney and the patient.
This course aims to address these issues in a concise practical one day setting, as a result of which we are confident that you will be equipped to deal with the key issues of medico legal report writing, namely:
- Receiving instructions

- Agreeing fees
- Being commissioned
- Making appointments
- The nature of the patient/client relationship
- The nature of the attorney/expert relationship
- Drafting the report
- Further reports
- Meetings of experts
- Appearing in court
This course will unequivocally focus on the earlier parts of the process given that court appearance eventuates in only a statistical minority of cases. We aim to get you sensibly, practically and efficiently up and running not make you perfect overnight!
Many highly respected clinicians count medico legal report writing as a major part of their case load and there are both financial and intellectual rewards.
